SARIPAT/ CHAUSAR is a popular game, used to be played in ancient India, specially by royal families. The game is similar to modern day ludo, with some changes in the rules. Sawantwadi, a town in Kokan, has a rich culture of wooden toys and the artisans of Sawantwadi have preserved the art of making this ancient game.

Saripat/Chausar is played with Two/Four players. This can be played by four individuals separately or two people sitting front of each other can team up like carrom. There are two dices and four tokens (Goti/songtya) for each player (total sixteen). The four tokens each are kept outside of the board. Each player rolls the dices one-by-one. Only when both dices show six points each, one token can enter the board. Each Token moves from the Right side, completes the entire round and when reaches to the side of the player, enters in the middle row. If on rolling of dices there two tokens come in the same place, the earlier token dies. This is exactly as we play in Ludo. It is taken out of the board and can enter only when there are six points on each of the dices. However, an additional condition is placed, that the token in its round must kill at least one of the enemy tokens. If any token is reached without killing the enemy token, it has to continue the second round. You may keep this condition as per your wish. The squares shown on the board with Cross sign are Safe Zones, in which your token is safe.

When the token reaches to the side of the player and enters in the middle row, reaching the square in the middle, it is said to reach home. When all four tokens reach home, the player wins.

If you are playing as Teams, tokens of both the players each, should reach home. Then the team is said to have won.

Enjoy this ancient game and enjoy your time with your families & friends. A perfect time pass in family/friends get together or picnic, isn’t it? Happy playing.
